Unclean drinking water impacts over 2 billion people worldwide, touching the lives of individuals, families, neighbors, and friends. In our local communities, Mississippians are faced each year with additional water challenges like boil water notices. Fortunately, there are solutions available, including bottled water and water filtration systems, which are emerging as a reliable resource for improving both the environment and human health.
Tap water can harbor a myriad of contaminants, including microbial impurities, lead, nitrates and nitrites, arsenic, byproducts, pesticides, and solvents. Recognizing this, I had an Exell bottom-load water filtration system installed in my home to provide my family with clean, filtered drinking water. The bottles are reusable, helping to limit plastic waste in our communities.
According to “Water Facts – Worldwide Water Supply,” by the Bureau of Reclamation California-Great Basin, 97% of the water on Earth is found in the ocean and 2.5% is unavailable fresh water (trapped in glaciers, underground, etc.). That leaves only 0.5% as available freshwater. It only stands to reason that we should be mindful of our water use and take the measures necessary to make sure our portion of that small amount is good, filtered, drinkable water.
